Today, Comedy Master Class' intrepid instructor (Iain F. MacNeil) warns aspiring comedians that their sense of humour might actually be a sickness.

COMEDY! According to my old friend Patch Adams, it's the very best medicine. But is it? Maybe not...

Are you familiar with the condition known as Witzelsucht? It is a very real condition that is essentially an addiction (SUCHT) to wisecracking (WITZEL) characterized by a tendency to make terrible puns like

"The girl said she knew me from the vegetarian restaurant, but I'd never met herbivore!"

or tell inappropriate jokes like

"Why does Santa Claus have such a big sack? Because he only comes once a year!"

 or tell pointless stories like

it's just like the time I went to the dentist and he said, "Your appointment is tomorrow!" and I was like, "OK!" so then I had the whole afternoon to do nothing and that's precisely what I did...(raucous laughter)

Why is this a problem? Everybody likes goofs like us...(don't they?) Witzelsucht is a problem because this tendency to be totally kooky all the time, especially at the most inappropriate of times, is indicative of:

  • frontal lobe damage,
  • tumours or
  • brain trauma.

And if that doesn't scare the crap out of you, know that most sufferers do not understand that their behaviour is abnormal. Which is fine because Witzelsuchts are blissfully unaware of the danger brewing in their brain. The real scary part is people don't think their inappropriate jokes are funny yet Witzelsuchts are incapable of walking off well before they get the light. Oh the humiliation.

How do you know if you suffer from Witzelsucht? If you can't resist cracking a joke, especially at the most inappropriate of times and fail to find anyone funny besides yourself, you probably have brain damage in your frontal lobe. Consider putting your comedy career on hiatus until your brain has been scanned.

If the results comeback negative for brain damage, congratulations! You're just obnoxious.
