Looks like Yasiin Bey f.k.a. Mos Def is making himself right at home here in Montreal. After making an appearance at Dave Chappelle’s Juke Joint Party during the Just For Laughs Festival, joining Kendrick Lamar on stage last weekend at Osheaga making things ‘Alright’, Tuesday night, the rapper, actor, and activist added comedian to his resume, debuting an hour and a half of stand-up comedy to a sold out crowd at the Phi Centre.
Special guest, Kaytranada did a stellar job hyping up the crowd with a DJ set before the main event.
45 minutes after the scheduled start time, Bey sauntered on stage to roaring applause and proceeded to take a seat at a drum kit and drum along to the beat of the track that Kaytranada was spinning.
Announcing that he’s “always wanted to do [stand up]” and that he was “fulfilling his dreams”, Bey began his set riffing on today’s rap game and his addiction to Worldstar.
At one point during his set he took a seat and began to read excerpts from a couple of philosophy books, asking the audience to think on those words… before tying those themes into his next joke.
It certainly wasn't the tightest stand up set we've seen, but it sure was fun and the crowd was on board from start to finish.
He closed on a true story involving him, his brother and a midget boxing match in Manila. What more could you ask for?
It was an evening people will be talking about for years to come. A ‘you had to be there’ kind of experience. It’s hard to think that fans would come out expecting the hip hop star to destroy comedically on stage, but it’s safe to say that people showed up not knowing what to expect... and they didn’t leave disappointed.
AND GUESS WHAT? We got word this morning that Bey had so much fun making people laugh that he's doing it all over again TONIGHT at the Phi Centre. Tickets on sale here.
We hope he sticks around Montreal for a little while longer—who knows where he'll pop up next.
